Find a supervisor
Some faculties allow you to choose your supervisors, while others will assign one to you.
Supervisors chosen by faculty
Faculties that choose your supervisor for you can look at your research interests and match you with the best team.
If you’re planning on studying education or law, you can match your research interests with a supervisor online:
If the faculty can't find a suitable supervisory team for you and your research project your application may not proceed.
Supervisors chosen by student
- Creative Industries
- Health (supervisors may also be chosen by your faculty)
- Science and Engineering
If you’re choosing your own supervisor, you may consider:
- their specialised teaching and research areas
- projects they're interested in supervising
- how many students they're currently supervising
- research students they've successfully supervised in the past.
It’s important to contact your potential supervisor to find out if you can work well together.

Submit an external supervisor memorandum with your application.
Your supervisor’s role
Your supervisory team are the most important people you'll work with while you're researching. You'll meet with them regularly, and they'll provide support and guidance throughout your project.
Our supervisor accreditation scheme ensures that your supervisor will be prepared to give you the highest quality support.
Choosing your research topic
Discussing your research interests early in the application process will make completing your application and research proposal much easier.
You'll need to propose a thesis title and include it in your application. This title may be tentative only; we understand that it may change as your research progresses.
Choose your topic
You can develop your own research topic in agreement with your supervisor and your faculty. This will ensure it has the right scope and scale for the research degree you wish to complete.
